Abacavir
Abacavir (ABC) is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). It is used to treat HIV and AIDS. It is often used in combination with other HIV medications. Abacavir is available as a single medication and in fixed-dose combinations with other drugs like lamivudine and zidovudine.
The chemical name of Abacavir is (1S,4R)-4-[2-amino-6-(cyclopropylamino)-9H-purin-9-yl]cyclopent-2-en-1-ylmethanol. Abacavir works by interfering with the action of an enzyme called reverse transcriptase, which the HIV virus needs to copy itself. By blocking this enzyme, abacavir helps to reduce the amount of HIV in the body and strengthens the immune system. This, in turn, helps to delay the progression of HIV infection and improve the overall health and quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS.
